Setup problems: stuck in Step 2 or Step 3

When you push the side key assigned to Vlingo, you should see a "Listening" dialog box come up indicating that Vlingo is running, and listening to your input. Normally everything gets set in the setup process.

If nothing happens when you press the side key in Step 3 of the setup program, there can be several causes for this. We'll check each of them in the instructions below.

Is your side key is set up correctly for Vlingo?

------------------------------------------------------

The trick is that that key needs to be set to "Nothing", not to "Vlingo". I know that sounds funny, but that's how it works.

Check the BlackBerry settings:

1. From the Applications screen, select Options.  For OS 5 devices, select Screen/Keyboard.  For OS 6 & 7 devices, select Device -> Convenience Key(s).

2. Scroll down until you get to the Right (or Left) Side Convenience Key Opens setting. Make sure that the key you want running Vlingo is set to Nothing. It might be tempting to set it to Vlingo, but don't do that or it won't work correctly.

3. Save your settings and exit.

Next, check Vlingo's own settings:

-----------------------------------------

1. Find the Vlingo icon on your Applications screen, and click it.

2. Select "Options".

3. Make sure that "Voice Key" is set consistently with the key you set to Nothing above (either Right or Left).

4. Make sure the "Voice Key Active" setting is set to "Anywhere". This ensures that you can use the side key from any screen on your BlackBerry, not just from a Vlingo screen.

Have you recently uninstalled a copy of Vlingo from your phone?

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

There can be rare cases where using the standard approach to deleting an application on a BlackBerry may not work. Please try this:

1. From the Blackberry home screen, navigate to Options.  For OS 5 devices, select Advanced Options -> Applications.  For OS 6 & 7 devices, select Device -> Application Management.

2. Click the Menu Key and then select Modules.

3. Locate the Vlingo module in the list. You can do this by scrolling, but it may be easier to type the word "Vlingo" which will automatically initiate a search.

4. Once Vlingo is highlighted, select Menu then Delete.

You will have to reboot the phone (pull the battery if the BlackBerry doesn't prompt you to reboot) to finish the process completely.

After rebooting, download Vlingo by pointing your BlackBerry's built-in browser to www.vlingo.com. This will automatically give you the correct version for your operating system. If you had purchased Vlingo Plus, you will not have to purchase it again.

Are your device's permissions are set correctly?

---------------------------------------------------------

This should happen as a part of setup. But if setup did not complete successfully, or if the permissions were changed, you may need to do this manually.

1. From the Applications screen, select Options.  For OS 5 devices, select Advanced Options -> Applications.  For OS 6 & 7 devices, select Device -> Application Management.

2. Scroll down to "Vlingo".

3. Press Menu -> Edit Permissions.

4. If any permission groups are set to Custom, Prompt, or Deny, then you should click Menu -> Change Option and then click Allow.

5. If any individual permissions are set to "Deny" or "Default", change them to "Allow".

6. Press Menu -> Save.

Following these steps should resolve the problem. If not, please let us know by responding to this email. Be as specific as you can about how far you were able to get through this process, what error you are getting, and about anything else you may have tried.
